What is Aquatic Therapy?
This question honestly does not have a perfect answer. Wikipedia will tell you this, “Aquatic therapy refers to treatments and exercises performed in water for relaxation, fitness, physical rehabilitation, and other therapeutic benefit. Typically a qualified aquatic therapist gives constant attendance to a person receiving treatment in a heated therapy pool”. However, this is only a part of what BBOT offers. BBOT’s approach to aquatic therapy does involve all of the above listed but also includes learn to swim and vital water safety skills. What could be considered “other therapeutic benefit” by the above definition is, BBOT considered Ability-Based interventions in the areas of sensory and regulation development, gross and fine motor skills, and cognitive interventions. Obviously behavioral interventions as appropriate to prevent drowning/injury as well. There is definitely quite a bit of jargon in this paragraph that could be considered confusing, so I think a list will be better served. When you think of BBOT aquatic therapy, you should think:
Tailored/Customizable
Learning to Swim
Ability-Based
Parent Involved
Occupational Therapy
Safety & Function
